seeded denim is good

seeded cotton. sometimes twill... whatever. it's cool.

cotton comes in seeds. the natural color of the fibers is a certain off-white. in the context of denim, we usually call that natural color “ecru denim.” generally, those seeds get thrown out, the cotton yarn gets dyed, and you wind up with, I don’t know, a pair of khaki chinos.

sometimes, when you’re putting out a natural cotton product, like a pair of ecru jeans, you wanna add a little something. a little bit of variation. sometimes… you just throw the bits of seed back in.

and that’s how you get seeded cotton fabrics. they could be a cotton twill like ecru “denim,” or an undyed cotton canvas, and you have a bunch of teensy black specks in there. I like that. it’s that tiny bit of interesting that makes me feel good.

(technically, denim is an indigo-on-white twill; black denim, ecru denim, and green denim are not technically any kind of denim, but we at least kind of know what those terms mean anyway, so I guess I’m being pedantic).

• Buck Mason does this well, I have their seeded natural HBT baker’s pants (I bought them full price). The problem is, most of this stuff doesn’t stay in stock.

  • Currently, they have these big jeans in stock.

  • And this matching trucker jacket. Aha! It’s a suit!

  • Generally, Buck Mason does this a lot. In the past, they’ve had deck shoes, p-43 cargo pants, and even a striped, cotton-linen blend tee shirt.

• And generally, if you like undyed fabrics, Unbleached Apparel is cool, although I’m not seeing anything seeded there now.
